Galway Bay Time Trial – Round 1 2026

On Saturday, 23rd May, OMCSU were on the water at Blackrock, Salthill, supporting Round 1 of the 2026 Galway Bay Swim time trials.

The time trial is an important step for swimmers preparing for the Frances Thornton Memorial Galway Bay Swim later this summer. All registered swimmers are required to complete a trial, with solo swimmers needing to complete the 4km open-water swim at Blackrock in under 95 minutes.

Conditions in Galway Bay made for a busy and rewarding afternoon, with swimmers, organisers, volunteers and safety crews all working together to keep the event running smoothly. OMCSU provided water safety support throughout the session, helping to ensure swimmers could focus on their qualification swim in a safe and well-managed environment.

The Galway Bay Swim is one of Ireland’s longest one-day swims, crossing from Aughinish in Co. Clare to Blackrock in Salthill, and continues to raise vital funds for Cancer Care West.

Well done to everyone who took part in Round 1, and thanks to all organisers, volunteers and support crews involved.
