On Saturday 18 July, our crew was out on Galway Bay as part of the safety operation for the Frances Thornton Memorial Galway Bay Swim — and what a privilege it was to be involved.
Now in its 21st year, the swim sees participants take on one of open water swimming’s great challenges: a roughly 10.5km crossing from Aughinish in Co. Clare to the Blackrock Diving Tower in Salthill, as solo swimmers and in relay teams. It’s a serious undertaking, and getting everyone across safely takes a real team effort on the water.
OMCSU was proud to provide safety cover alongside local boat captains, sailors, and fishermen — a great example of Galway’s water-based services coming together for a common purpose.
Behind it all is a wonderful cause. Since it began in 2006, the swim has raised over €2.1 million for Cancer Care West, supporting people and families across the west of Ireland affected by cancer. It’s a cause that touches so many, and one we were honoured to help in our own small way.
A huge well done to every swimmer who took to the water, and sincere thanks to the organisers for another superbly run event. We look forward to being back on the bay with you again.
